Is Peer Support Right for You?

Is Peer Support Right for You?

Peer support is one way of connecting with one or more people who have been through a similar cancer experience. This can happen in different ways, such as through a 1:1 peer connection or in a peer support group.

A peer mentor is someone who has lived through cancer and supports others by sharing their experience, listening, and offering perspective. A peer support group brings together several people affected by cancer to talk, listen, and learn from one another.

Research suggests when peers share information and experiences about cancer, it may be helpful for some people.1 It has become an important part of cancer patient care.2 However, it’s not a fit for everyone – and that’s okay.

How peer support groups may help

For many people, peer support groups may reduce feelings of isolation.3 Hearing from others who understand what you’re going through may help to create a sense of connection.3

Groups can also be a place to learn coping strategies and exchange practical advice.3 In one study, people who participated in peer support groups reported higher levels of cancer-related knowledge compared to non-members.2

Groups may be:

  • In person or online
  • Led by a trained facilitator or peer-led
  • Structured around topics or more open discussion
  • Designed around a group activity such as flower arranging or making pottery

In a group, you might hear:
  • Personal stories about cancer experiences
  • Conversations about side effects
  • Emotional topics like fear of recurrence3
You can choose how much you participate. It’s okay to listen without sharing.

How 1:1 peer support may help

Individual peer support offers similar benefits in a more individualized way. In a study of a 1:1 peer coaching program, most patients felt less isolated and more able to manage their fears.4 Some people may be more comfortable talking 1:1 with a peer than in a group setting.

Is 1:1 peer support right for me?

1:1 support may be a good fit if you:

  • Prefer one-on-one conversations
  • Want a more personal, private space to talk
  • Are looking for someone with a similar experience
After connecting, you can ask yourself:
  • Did I feel comfortable talking with this person?
  • Did the conversation help me feel more prepared or supported?

Is a peer support group right for me?

You can think of a group as something to try. You don’t have to make a long-term commitment. After attending, consider:

  • Did I feel supported?
  • Was I comfortable in the group?
  • Did the discussion help me?
You may need to try more than one group. Some people prefer smaller groups, structured formats, or online options.

Final Thoughts

Peer support focuses on connection, understanding, and practical insight from people who have been through similar experiences. If peer support doesn’t feel like a fit for you, you can talk to your doctor about other potential supportive resources such as a therapist, counselor, or social worker.
