Tips for Navigating October - The Pinkest Month of the Year

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), and with it comes a sea of pink ribbons, fundraising walks, and special events. For many, it’s a time of solidarity, education, and hope. Seeing all the reminders of breast cancer and hearing the stories of others might help you feel less alone. It may also bring up sad or stressful feelings.

There is no “right” way to feel about this month. You get to decide how to take care of yourself. These tips can help you get through October in a way that works best for you.

1. Choose How Much You Want to Do – or say no to

You don’t have to take part in everything if you don’t want to. Some people like going to events, wearing pink, or sharing their stories. Others may want to be quiet and take a break from it all. Both are okay.

If people ask you to join something and you don’t feel up to it, you can say:

  • “Thanks, but I need some space this month.”
  • “I support it in my own way, just more quietly.”
You can decide how much (or how little) you want to be involved.

2. Find People Who Understand You

If you want to feel less alone, this month is a good time to connect with others who have been through something similar. There are support groups, both online and in person, where you can share your story or just listen. Even if you don’t want to talk much, being with people who “get it” might help.

3. Have Your Feelings

You might be fine during BCAM – or you might feel sad, angry, tired, or just plain overwhelmed. Either one is okay. If this month reminds you of hard times and brings up big feelings, that’s understandable. Crying can be a healthy release. You may also want to try journaling. And don’t forget, you can talk with your doctor or a therapist or trusted friend.

4. Do What Makes You Feel Good

October can be a lot. So, it’s important to do things that help you feel calm and cared for. This might be:

  • Spending time with people you love
  • Taking a walk or enjoying nature
  • Listening to music or reading a book
  • Saying “no” to things that feel like too much
Even small things, like a cup of tea or a favorite TV show, may help you feel better. Think about what makes you feel good and try to make time for it.

5. Step Back from the Noise

This month can come with a lot of noise on social media, in the news, and even in everyday conversations. It’s okay to step away if it feels like it’s too much.

You can:

  • Mute or unfollow social media accounts for a while
  • Skip events that are focused on breast cancer
  • Let friends or coworkers know you're limiting breast cancer-related talk right now
It’s not selfish. It’s self-care.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month can bring up all kinds of feelings—and they’re all valid. Whether you love the pink ribbons or want to stay away from them, you deserve to feel supported and respected.

There’s no one way to get through October. Do what feels right for you. This month is about awareness, but it should also be about care, understanding, and kindness. That includes kindness to yourself.
